Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an inexpensively mass-producible coupler facilitating accurate positioning by forming V-shaped grooves for fixing an optical fiber and a rod lens on the[100]face of a silicon single crystal with the[111] face as the side walls. CONSTITUTION:A mask 70 having a wide opening 71 and a narrow opening 72 which are allowed to coincide with each other by the center lines in the y-axis direction of the[100]face 60A of a substrate 60 made of silicon single crystal is placed on the substrate 60, and the substrate 60 is etched with an aqueous soln. of KOH of NaOH to form a wide V-shaped groove 91 and a narrow V-shaped groove 92 which are different from each other in depth on the XZ face. After putting a rod lens 20 in the groove 91 and an optical fiber 10 in the groove 92, ends of the lens 20 and the fiber 10 are joined together with a transparent adhesive layer 2, and the lens 20 and the fiber 10 are fixed in the grooves 91, 92 by adhesion with an adhesive 4, respectively. Thus, an inexpensively mass-producible optical fiber-rod lens coupler facilitating accurate positioning is obtd.
