Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce the amt. of sewage sludge efficiently and increase the amt. of gaseous methane by subjecting the initially settled sludge and excess sludge from a sewage treatment plant to acid formation at respectively different pH in a two phase type anaerobic digestion method for sewage sludge.
CONSTITUTION: The initially settled sludge produced from a sewage treatment plant which is the raw material to be treated is charged into an acid forming vessele 1 and excess sludge into an acid forming vessel 2, respectively, where they are thoroughly acclimatized. The initially settled sludge is controlled to 4.5W5.8pH and the excess sludge to 5.9W7.0pH, and these are agitated by maintaining their temp. constant under anaerobic conditions, and are held for a few days. The high polymer materials in the sludge are degradated to low molecules by the action of acid forming bacteria and are decomposed to org. acids and alcohols. Thence, the formed slurry is charged into a gasifying vessel 3, where it is converted to gaseous methane and carbon dioxide. The gases are metered with a gas metering device 4 and are stored in a gas holder 5. The efficiency of reaction is made highest by performing such treatment corresponding to the org. material compositions contained in the slude in this way.
