Abstract
PURPOSE: To separate heavy metals such as uranium from aq. solns, at high rates of adsoprtion by bringing porous glass using borosilicate glass as a raw material and an aq. soln. contg. heavy metals into contact therewith.
CONSTITUTION: Borosilicate glass is heat treated and is divided to a phase rich with acid soluble sodium borate and a phase rich with virtually insoluble silicon dioxide. Thence, it is acid treated to allow a phase rich with sodium borate to elute and to form porous glass consisting chiefly of silicon dioxide. Such porous glass is subjected to immersion in a titanic acid soln., heat treatment, etc. according to need, whereby its surface or pore inside is modified. This porous glass is molded to a prescribed shape, and is brought into contact with an aq. soln. contg. heavy metals such as sea water or industrial waste water, whereby the heavy metals in the aq. soln. is adsorbed and separated. The porous glass is chemically stable and retains high adsorption performance for a long time in collecting uranium from sea water.
