Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:The titled compounds of formula I (R1, R2 are 1W10C alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 4-Pentylphenyl 4-(trans-4'-propylcyclohexyl)benzoate.
USE: FEM LCD (Field effect mode liquid crystal display): they are stable to chemicals, heat, light and moisture and increase the response speed of the liquid crystal composition without increasing the crossover frequency fc, when they are added to a liquid crystal. Further, the liquid crystal temperature range is widened and the transparent point is raised.
PREPARATION: The PCH liquid crystal of formula II is hydrolyzed in an aqueous solution of a strong base such as potassium hydroxide to give a compound of formula III, which is made to react with a chloride such as thionyl chloride to form a compound of formula IV. Finally, the reaction of the compound of formula IV with an alkylphenol in the presence of a basic substance such as pyridine or triethylamine affords the compound of formula I.
