Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain approximately constant depth of penetration by applying alternating magnetic fields to the arc generated from a nonconsumable electrode of which the sectional shape in the leading end part is approximately rectangular shape, and melting the side faces of the narrow groove materials to be welded while oscillating the arc in said long side direction.
CONSTITUTION: The direction approximately perpendicular to the weld line direction of a nonconsumable electrode 2 projecting from a welding torch 1 is made the long side of a rectangular section, and this long side end part is beveled as shown by a symbol (r). Next, the electrode 2 of such a shape is used, and while a filler metal 9 is being supplied, alternating magnetic fields are applied in the arrow 8 direction, whereby the arc is oscillated in the arrow A-B direction. As a result, the arc is oscillated in the long side direction simply by applying the alternating magnetic fields weaker than those to be applied to the conventional electrodes of a circular section. Since the actual arc length does not change, the bottom corners or side walls of the materials to be welded having a narrow groove are melted sufficiently and uniformly by a minimum of required welding heat input less than that in the prior art.
