Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the titled glass-forming mold having excellent oxidation resistance, heat cracking resistance, inertness to glass, and abrasion resistance, by forming an Al2O3 layer on the surface, especially at least the cavity surface, of the glass-forming mold.
CONSTITUTION: The surface, especially the cavity surface, of a glass-forming mold id coated with an Al2O3 layer of 0.5W10μm thick to obtain the objective heat- resistant and abrasion-resistant surface-coated mold for forming glass. An intermediate layer of TiC, TiN and/or TiCN having a thickness of 1W20μm is interposed between the Al2O3 layer and the mold surface. Since the intermediate layer has uniform property, i.e. high bonding strength both to the mold surface and the Al2O3 coating layer, the Al2O3 layer can be bonded firmly to the mold surface.
