Abstract

PURPOSE:To always obtain a high quality image, by charging and exposing a photoreceptor in returning a scanner, and controlling quality of charging and exposure in order to adjust potential of the electrostatic latent image formed to a standard value. CONSTITUTION:When power is supplied to a copying machine, a control circuit 21 applies input control signals to a corona charger power source 22 and an exposure lamp power source 23 to execute initial setting. Both the power sources are turned on, and a scanner having an exposure lamp 5, and mirrors 6, 7 reaches a returning position R from a copying state. At that time, exposure is stopped, and the corona charger power source 22 is kept on. The charged potential on a photoreceptor 11 is detected with a surface electrometer 18, and compared with the set potential of a circuit 20 for setting a reference latent image potential in a comparator 19 to control the source 22. When the scanner reaches the point G, exposure is started, the latent image potential on the photoreceptor 11 corresponding to the background standard density pattern 3 is likewise compared with the reference background set potential, and both are equalized by controlling the lamp power source 23, thus permitting a high quality copy to be always obtained.
