PURPOSE:To automatically set to a tape speed in case of recording, when reproducing, by using a capstan FG signal and a reproducing control signal, and discriminating the member of FG signals in 1 period of the control signal. CONSTITUTION:A reproducing control signal is divided into 1/8 by a 1/8 frequency-dividing circuit 22, and generates the first reset pulse and a sampling pulse by a pulse generating circuit 23 together with a capstan FG signal. The FG signal and the first reset pulse are inputted to a counting circuit 25. Contents of this circuit 25 become 24X8=192 and 12X8=96 in case of a short time mode and a long time mode, respectively, since the control signal is always 30Hz. Accordingly, when the contents of the circuit 25 are read out by a sampling pulse generated immediately before the first reset pulse, the mode can be discriminated. When said operation is executed by an AND gate circuit 26 and the speed control is switched through a memory circuit 27, it is possible to set to a tape speed in case of recording automatically, when reproducing.
