Abstract
PURPOSE: When a thermosetting emulsion is produced by radiation emulsion polymerization, a specific amount of ammonium acetate is dissolved in the dispersant and the radiation polymerization is effected to produce an emulsion having a suitable viscosity as a coating additive.
CONSTITUTION: A monomer mixture consisting of unreactive monomer such as acrylic or methacrylic ester and monomers having reactive functional groups such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, 2-hydroxyethy acrylate or methacrylate or butoxymethyl acrylate or methacrylate amide, is combined with a crosslinkable monomer such as 1, 6-hexanediol diacrylate or dimethacrylate. Further, ammonium acetate is added to the monomer mixture by 0.5W0.2wt% and they are irradiated with ionizing radiation such as gammer rays in an aqueous medium, preferably by 0.01W 1.0Mrad, to effect the emulsion polymerization.
USE: The resultant emulsion emulsion gives coatinf films of high water resistance, chemical resistance, good luster and physical properties.
