Abstract

PURPOSE: To specific monomer is made to act on an alkyl methacrylate polymer emulsion to produce the titled emulsifier-free emulsion having excellent film forming property and giving coating films with high water, alkali and weathering resistance.
CONSTITUTION: (A) The emulsion polymerization is effected in the presence of (a) an alkyl methacrylate and (b) a small amount of dissociative monomer, preferably styrenesulfonate metal salt, to give an aqueous emulsion of the alkyl methacrylate polymer particles. Then, (a') a small amount of a dissociative monomer, preferably the same one as component b, and (b') an alkyl methacrylate and (c') an alkyl acrylate are added thereto to form (B) a copolymer consisting of components a' and b' around the above particles A where the ratios of b'/c', and A/B are adjusted to (40W50)/(60W50) and (33W50)/(67W50) by weight.
