Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the destruction of GTOs, when an anode current is small, by providing a period applying a turn-on DC voltage and a turn-off DC voltage at the same time at turn-off of the GTOs. CONSTITUTION:A gate circuit 12 of a GTO10 has a turn-on gate circuit 12a and a turn-off gate circuit 12b connected between the gate and cathode and the GTO is turned on by a switch control signal A applied to a switch 16 of the gate circuit 12a. With this state, when the GTO12 is turned off, a control signal B is applied to a switch 20 of the gate circuit 12b before the switch 16 is turned of. Since the output of DC power supplies 14, 18 is applied between the gate and cathode of the GTO10 at the period tau2 when both switches 16, 20 are turned on, even if the gate current IG is small, the GTO is not turned off. The main circuit current ITS is turned off as D and a voltage between the gate and cathode is as E and no power is consumed in the GTO10, allowing to avoid destruction.
