Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of a snubber circuit for a gate turn-off thyristor (GTO) at the time of turning OFF the GTO by conducting the switching means of the snubber circuit in different directivities in ON and OFF states of the GTO. CONSTITUTION:When a GTO3 is conducted in the state that a capacitor 10 is charged to a power voltage by the conduction of a thyristor 11 in accordance with a gate signal for turning ON the GTO3, the capacitor 10 is discharged, and is further charged in reverse polarity due to the existence of a wiring inductance 15. When the GTO3 is turned OFF in accordance with the gate signal for turning OFF the GTO3, the thyristor 11 is turned ON, and part of the current flowing through the GTO3 flows through the capacitor 10 and the thyristor 11. Since the capacitor 10 is charged in reverse polarity, the jumping voltage applied between the anode and the cathode of the GTO3 due to the wiring inductance 15 is added to the voltage charged in reverse polarity, with the result that the breakdown of the GTO can be prevented.
