Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover nonferrous metals such as Zn as well as iron by granulating various kinds of iron-contg. dust and sludge discharged from an iron mill together with quick lime powder and using the granules as a coolant for molten metal in steel making operation.
CONSTITUTION: Dust and sludge discharged from a blast furnace, a converter, a sintering furnace, a rolling mill, etc. contain useful metals such as Fe, Zn, K and Na, so they are mixed with 5W30% quick lime powder and granulated to 5W70mmsize. The granules are used as a coolant when the temp. of molten metal is raised excessively in the operation of the converter, etc. The contained Fe enters molten steel, CaO is utilized to regulate the basicity of slag, and metals such as Zn are vaporized, cooled at the outside of the converter, and recovered with a dust collector.
