Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide yellow iron oxide with a vivified color tone and an improved heat resistance, by subjecting yellow iron oxide dispersed in water or in an aqueous alkali solution to a hydrothermal treatment and, afte the addition of an oxide or hydroxide of Si, Al or Mg, repeating the same treatment.
CONSTITUTION: Yellow iron oxide of structural formula α-FeOOh having a length- wise diameter of preferably 0.5W1μ is dispersed in water or in a 10N or lower aqueous alkali solution and subjected to a hydrothermal treatment at 100W250°C for about 2W20min. Subsequently, the dispersion is again subjected to the same treatment, after the addition of at least one member selected from oxides of silicon, aluminum or magnesium, or their salts or hydroxides (e.g. silicon dioxide, aluminum silicate or magnesium hydroxide), at 100W250°C for about 2W20min, whereby a uniform and solid coating is formed on the surface of yellow iron oxide crystals, so that the yellow iron oxide is prevented from converting into α-Fe2O3 due to a dehydration reaction.
