Abstract

PURPOSE: 3d-Hdroxy-7-ketocholanic acid is hydrogenated in t-butanol in the presence of a catalyst using sodium to produce the titled crude product of relatively high purity easily in an industrial scale.
CONSTITUTION: The hydrogenation of 3d-hydroxy-7-ketocholanic acid is conducted in t-butanol in the presence of a catalyst such as Raney nickel, nickel (II) chloride hexahydrate, iron or manganese (IV) oxide using sodium in such as amount as exceeding 10 times the molar quantity of the ketocholanic acid to produce crude ursodeoxycholic acid. The amount of the t-butanol is more than 10 times, preferably about 300 times the volume/the weight of the ketochloanic acid.
