Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure the thickness of a molten liquid layer of injected powder, by transmitting an ultrasonic wave to the surface of a molten steel through a delaying stick whose lower end is gradually injected into the molten from the upper part of the molten liquid layer of powder, or which is grdually pulled up from the inside of the molten steel to the upper part of the molten liquid layer of powder.
CONSTITUTION: When the lower end 20a of a delaying stick 20 is gradually lowered to injected powder 14 by means of a power cylinder 24, the lower end 20 goes into a molten steel 12 through the injected powder 14d, a layer in sintered condition 14c, and a molten liquid layer 14a. At this time, a reflected echo by the upper surface of the molten steel 12 appears in a cathode-ray tube 28a in an ultrasonic wave signal processing device 28. Conversely, when the lower end 20a is pulled up from the inside of the molten steel 12 and passes through the molten liquid layer 14a, the reflected echo disappears. Therefore, the interval between the appearance and disappearance of the reflected echo corresponds to the thickness of the molten liquid layer 14a of injected powder, and the thickness is obtained by reading the received diagram.
