Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a surface active agent for compounding to a detergent, in high conversion, using only a small excess of an aqueous solution of H2O2, by reacting an aliphatic tertiary amine with the H2O2 solution in the presence of a polybasic acid having hydroxyl group.
CONSTITUTION: An amine oxide is prepared by reacting (A) an aliphatic tertiary amine such as alkyldimethyl (or diethyl)amine, alkylpolyoxyethylene ether dimethyl (or diethyl) amine, etc. with (B) 10% excess of an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide, based on the theoretically necessary amount, in the presence of (C) 0.01W 5wt% of a polybasic acid having one or more hydroxyl groups or its salt (e.g. citric acid, tartaric acid, etc.).
EFFECT: The troublesome procedure of adding water during the reaction for preventing gelation, can be eliminated.
