1465690 Amine oxides IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 47518/73 Heading C2C Novel amine oxides of formula in which R is an alkyl radical substituted in the 2-position relative to the nitrogen atom by an alkyl group, R<SP>111</SP> is an alkyl group or R<SP>11</SP>OH, and R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> which may be the same or different are alkylene radicals, may be prepared by reacting an alkanolamine of formula with an aldehyde in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst to form the tertiary amine of formula followed by conversion to the amine oxide by reaction with an oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide. The amine oxides are used as surfactants in detergent formulations.
