Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the adhesion of amalgam to the electrodes of a luminous tube enclosing at least sodium and mercury and eradicate the unreliability of starting and the occurrence of a crack, by adjusting the diameter of the core of each electrode of the luminous tube to specific specific value and less per a unit rated current. CONSTITUTION:The diameter of the core of each electrode of a ceramic luminous tube 1 enclosing electrodes 2, 3 of which base material is tungsten and at least sodium and mercury is adjusted to 0.98mm.phi and less per a unit rated current. It is because the unreliability of starting and the occurrence of a crack occurring in the working time of the luminous tube 1 is caused by the diffusion of the lines alpha of electric force occasioned by the portions phi adhered with amalgam of sodium-mercury created on the end portions of the luminous tube 1, and the adhered portions phi are created because the amalgam vapor is apt to adhere to the electrodes 2, 3 when lighting and the extinguishment of light are done frequently in a short time. Therefore, the unreliability of starting and the occurrence of a crack can be eradicated by preventing the adhesion of amalgam by means of making the diameter of the core of each electrode large and slowing the cooling speed of the electrodes after extinguishing light.
