PURPOSE:To surely judge whether the paper being handled is only one sheet or not, by permitting both surfaces of the paper to be held between two diodes with constant force, and said bodies to be slided along the surfaces of the paper relatively to the paper, and then comparing the magnitude of the driving force at that time with a prescribed value. CONSTITUTION:Paper 1 is held between a pad 10 and a roller 11 whose surfaces are covered with a high polymer material such as rubber, and the pad 10 is pressed against the roller 11 with prescribed force through a rack 21 and a pinion 13 by driving motor 14. The roller 11 is rotated by another motor 15. The force required to start rotation of the roller 11 when only one sheet of paper is handled, is larger than that required when >=2 sheets of paper are handled, because the coefficient of friction between each sheet of paper is smaller than that among the paper, pad 10 and roller 11. Therefore, by providing the means which detect values of electric current flowing through the motors 14, 15 and compare the detected values with a prescribed value, it is surely judged for any kind of paper whether the paper is only one sheet or not.
