Abstract

PURPOSE:To lower the cost of production and to stabilize production by forming a polycrystalline preform of an ionic crystal consisting of a core and a clad, rolling this and producing an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:A high refractive index ionic crystal for a core part is filled in an inner barrel 1, and a low refractive index ionic crystal for a clad part is filled in an outer barrel 2. While the barrels are being heated with heaters 5 near their respective outlets in such a manner that the temp. goes slightly lower than the m.p. of each ionic crystal, they are pressed by an inner ram 6 and an outer ram 7, thereby forming a polycrystalline preform 9 having rod-shaped core and clad construction. Thence, the preform 9 is heated to below the m.p. by heaters 21, pressure is applied thereto by a ram 22, and the preform is rolled by heated rolling rolls 23. This rolling operation is repeated a number of times while the diameter of the pass of the rolls is being gradually diminished, whereby the optical fiber of a desired diameter is obtained.
