Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure a distance between an interrogator and a transponder, by a method wherein a pair of question pulses having a particular shape are set from the interrogator, the transponder detects said particular pulses which are returned by a given delay. CONSTITUTION:An interrogator (aircraft) outputs a Gaussian waveform pulse, having a particular shape, whose forward edge is shown in formula (where E: an integer, T: a time, and F= 0.5), from a pulse generating part 1 after controlling it by means of a time controlling part 2, a carrier is modulated in a rectineal amplitude manner by means of a transmitting pulse modulating part 3, and is radiated from an antenna 6 via a power amplifying part 4, and a diplexer 15. At the transponder side, an electric wave is detected by a detector 19 via an antenna 16, a diplexer 15, a preselector 15, and an intermediate frequency amplifier 18 to fetch an envelope, A delay comparator 20 decides a timing of a first pulse of a reception wave, the controlling part 2 generates re-transmitting pulse by a given time delay, and is radiated from the antenna 16 after processing it by means of a transmitting part 21 like the processing which is conducted at the aircraft side. At the aircraft side also, a processing like that done at the transponder side is performed by a reception part 7. This measures a distance between the two from a difference in time between the pulses.
