Abstract

1489554 Classifying timber using radio waves INSINOORITOIMISTO INNOTEC OY 9 Feb 1976 [14 Feb 1975 19 Nov 1975] 04910/76 Heading G1N Timber is classified by detecting knots in it by determining the phase shift of a micro-wave signal passed through it. Energy from an r.f. generator 2 preferably having a frequency of 10 GHz is passed via waveguide 3 to a transmitting antenna 4, having an aperture which is short in the direction of travel of the timber but is equal laterally to the width of the timber. A receiving antenna 5 connects to a diode detector 6. There may be pairs of antennae operating at different frequencies whereby the effects of moisture or of movements of the timber towards either antenna may be compensated. The micro-wave signal may be frequency or amplitude modulated. The intensity or type of polarization of the radiation can be selected taking into consideration the direction in which timber is to be measured or growth direction. The signal received when gaps between timber lengths are present between the antennae may be used for calibration.
