Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the temperature drop of a slab stored in a slab yard, and to reduce the heating energy for heating the slab to be fed to a hot rolling pass, by employing a self-propelled heat insulating cover for covering high temperature slabs stored in a pile in the slab yard before being fed to the hot rolling pass. CONSTITUTION:A high temperature slab running out of a continuous casting plant, etc., 1 is carried by a carrier roller table 2 into a slab yard 3, and is piled up by a piler 9 to a prescribed pile height. This pile of slabs is transported by a crane 4 to storing places 5, 11 in a slab yard 3; then, a self-propelled heat insulating cover 15 is driven to move to a position for covering the pile of slabs. After a prescribed retension time, the heat insulating cover 15 is withdrawn from the covering position, the pile of slabs is conveyed by the crane 4 to an unpiler 10, and the slabs are pushed out one by one onto the carrier roller tables 6, 12 for sending them to a hot rolling pass; these slabs are then heated by heating furnaces 7, 13 to prescribed temperatures and are sent to the hot-rolling pass. The heat insulating cover 15 effectively reduce the temperature drops of the slabs so that the heating energy of the heating furnaces 7, 13 is reduced.
