Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase the travelling durability of a magnetic recording medium, by forming a thin film layer composed of a comparatively hard metal or its oxide or nitride on the rear surface of a supporting substrate containing a ferromagnetic thin film laye. CONSTITUTION:A metal such as V, Ti, Zr, Cr, Mn, Mo, W, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rh, Ir, Bi. B, etc or its oxide or nitride having >=4 Mohs' hardness is vapor-deposited on the rear surface of a supporter 1 moving within a vacuum chamber 5 by means of an evaporating crucible 9 to form a thin film layer 3 of the above-menthioned metal or its oxide or nitride. Then a ferromagnetic material is vapor-deposited by an evaporating crucible 10, and at the same time a metal of the >=4 Moh's hardness which is partially mixed into the ferromagnetic material to form a protective layer is vapordeposited by an evaporating crucible 11 respectively. In such way, a magnetic recording medium containing a ferromagnetic thin film layer 2 and a protective layer 4 is obtained.
