Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent surge by controlling the open degrees of flow control valves disposed in respective bypass passages each parallel with an intermediate cooler in each compressing stage with the use of detected signals indicating condition of high- stage side intake fluid medium, thereby to control a ratio between each bypass flow rate and a flow rate of medium flowing through each intermediate cooler.
CONSTITUTION: When a fourth stage compressor 5 establishes a blow-off condition, the condition of intake fluid medium is detected by a fourth-stage intake fluid temperature detector 36, an intake pressure detector 33 and etc. signals of which are transmitted to a controller for controlling a rate of flows distributed to an intermediate coller 8 and a bypass flow passage 30. When a flow control valve 30a is opened at a suitable degree, a part of high pressure medium discharged from a third stage compressor 4 is distributed to both bypass passage 30 and intermediate cooler 8. The cooled medium from the intermediate cooler 8 and the high temperature medium from the bypass passage 30 reach at the intake side of the fourth stage compressor 4 and join together. Thereby, the intake volume of the fourth stage compressor 5 increases so as to enable safe operation outside the surging range of the compressor to be carried out.
