Abstract

PURPOSE:To determine the residual chlorine in liquid to be measured from the electrolytic current of free iodine by allowing paper in which potassium iodide and acetic acid are held in a dry state to contact said liquid. CONSTITUTION:Filter paper 31-34 are immersed in mixed solns. of potassium iodide and acetic acid, after which they are dried to hold the potassium iodide and acetic acid in a dry state. Plurals of these sheets are laminated to form a filter paper laminate 3. Electrodes 4, 4' functioning as cathodes and anode sandwich the laminate 3 from both sides. The electrode 4, 4' are connected via lead wires to a constant voltage power source 1 and a galvanometer 2. If the laminate 3 is immersed in the liquid 6 to be measured in a vessel 5, the potassium iodide contained in the filter paper 31-34 and the free chlorine or combined chlorine in the liquid 6 react to produce free iodine. This iodine is electrolyzed by the voltage applied to the electrodes 4, 4' and its electrolytic current is detected by the galvanometer 2.
