Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent damaging and breaking of a torch owing to the generation of series arcs by detecting the abnormal approach of the torch to base metals when it occurs and interrupting electric power to be supplied between the electrode of the torch and the base metals.
CONSTITUTION: Electric power is supplied between base metals 4 and the electrode 5 of a torch T by an electric power source 2 for plasma arc, whereby a plasma arc PA is generated. The output electric current of the power source 2 is detected by an electric current detector 8. A control device 9 compares this detection signal with a reference value, and the phase of the control element TH of the power source 2 is controlled by the signal from the device 9. The constant electric current characteristics setting the output current of the power source 2 are obtained by this feedback controlling. Further, voltage is detected by a voltage comparator 11 and this and the reference voltage varied in accordance with the set current are compared. When the torch T approaches abnormally to the base metals 4 and the detection voltages drops lower than the reference voltage, an ouput is emitted to the power source 2, whereby the electric current is interrupted.
