Abstract
PURPOSE: To considerably improve the accuracy of controlling the contact length of a quick cooling roll and molten metal by allowing quick cooling air to contact with the film of the molten metal pulled up to the revolving circumferential surface of a pickup roll.
CONSTITUTION: Part of the circumferential surface of a pickup roll 3 is immersed in the molten metal 2 in a filling vessel 1, and the roll 3 is revolved to pull up the moltem metal 2 in a manner as to wind up the same, thereby forming a thin molten metal film 2'. If the surface condition and peripheral speed of the roll 3 and the viscosity and others of the molten metal are made constant, the thickness of this molten metal film 2' hardly fluctuates despite the occurrence of some fluctuation in the contact length. Thence, a quick cooling roll 4 is allowed to contact with the film 2' to quickly cool and solidify the molten metal, whereby amorphous metal is obtained. Since the position relating control of the roll 4 in contact with the film 2' is the mechanical position relating control of the roll 3 and the 4, the control is extremely easy.
