PURPOSE:To make automatic measurement possible while maintaining high accuracy by performing the measurement of the length of cracks produced in a test piece when repetitive loads are applied thereto by an image pickup signal having a synchronizing means, an arithmetic circuit making signal processing thereof, etc. CONSTITUTION:Repetitive loads are applied to a test by using an actuator and the length of the cracks produced on the test piece at that time is measured by using an image pickup tube which is so arranged as to operate synchronously with the loads, a signal processor, etc. For example, the cracked part of a test piece 1 which is being applied with repetitive loads by an actuator A is observed with a monitor 8 via an image pickup tube 7. At this time, a strobe 10 is triggered to emit light synchronously with the load periods or a shutter 16 is opened or closed, or further a synchronizing signal is applied to the image pickup tube or the like by using a circuit 17 so that image pickup is accomplished when the crack opens most, whereby the length of the crack is automatically measured through the use of a crack length read circuit 9 and the like.
