Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a flame-retardant having good thermal stability and containing no insolubles from a guanidine salt which suffers thermal discoloring and have a poor thermal stability, by dissolving the guamidine salt in water and treating the solution with a basic anion exchange resin.
CONSTITUTION: A guanidine solution dissolved in water is brought into contact with a basic anion exchange resin sufficiently to reduce the content of ammonium salts in the solution to a level of 0.04mol% or lower, based on the guanidine salt, and then the resin is removed by filtration to obtain a flame-retardant having excellent heat resistance. In this process, it is not necessary to prepare a special guanidine salt for the flame-retandant. By the above-mentioned treatment of the guanidine salt which cannot be used due to thermal discoloring, impurities are not increased but, on the contrary, cationic components present as impurities can be removed out of the system, so that a high-purity flame-retardant can be easily prepared.
