Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high selectivity without producing by- products by one stage, by subjecting an inexpensive N-β-hydroxyethylaniline or its nucleus substituted derivative to a reaction in gas phase using a catalyst consisting of an inexpensive and easily obtainable cadmium sulfide or zinc sulfide.
CONSTITUTION: Using a catalyst consisting of cadmium sulfide, zinc sulfide (e.g., powder, granule, or molded article of cadmium sulfide, zinc sulfide, or their mixture), N-β-hydroxyethylaniline or its nucleus substituted derivative is subjected to a reaction in gas phase, to give indole or indole derivative. Ethylene glycol and aniline are preferably present in the reaction system. The reaction temperature is 200W500°C, preferably 250W400°C.
