Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an anhydride crystal of good quality in high yield, by drying a hydrate crystal of an amino acid under reduced pressure at specific temperatures in two stages.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrate crystal of an amino acid, e.g. L-serine monohydrate crystal, L-proline monohydrate crystal or L-arginine dihydrate crystal, is dried by heating at 40W60°C for 5hr or longer at a reduced pressure of usually 600mmHg or more, preferably 700W750mmHg for preventing the consolidation of the crystal and shortening the drying time, and then heated at 70°C or above to give an anhydrous amino acid crystal. The drying in the first step is carried out for volatilizing the water of crystallization at a suitable speed at a temperature higher, preferably about 5W10°C higher, than the transformation temperature of the hydrate crystal to the anhydrous crystal. The second drying step is carried out for evaporating the adhesive moisture of the crystal and drying the crystal sufficiently. The amount of the consolidated crystal to be recrystallized and redried can be remarkably reduced.
