Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A compound represented by formula I, wherein R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are each hydrogen, a halogen or an organic group, with the proviso that a case in which all of R1WR5 are same and are hydrogen and halogen atoms are excluded, and at least one of R1WR5 is a functional group.
USE: A radical polymerization initiator having an ability to initiate radical addition polymerization of a vinyl monomer, an acrylic monomer or the like and to impart chemical reactivity, hydrophilicity, impact resistance, etc., to polymers.
PREPARATION: A polymerization initiator of formula I is prepared by subjecting a compound of formula II to singlet state oxygen oxidation, for example by a method in which the compound of formula II is oxidized by irradiation with visible light in the presence of a sensitizing agent, e.g., Rose Bengale or Methylene Blue. A variety of properties can be imparted by selecting the type of functional groups used in either one of R1WR5.
