Abstract

PURPOSE: To ensure prescribed running operation of an engine, by detecting an opening degree of the shut off valve for cutting off the supply of fresh air to a fuel cut cylinder at partial cylinder operation and the exhaust gas recirculating valve for recirculating exhaust gas to the fuel cut cylinder and switching the valves to a vlave actuating signal at the safety side when detected abnormality.
CONSTITUTION: A cylinder quantity controlled engine is operated in such a manner that a fuel injection signal A fed from a fuel injection control circuit 1 at a light load operation is cut out by a cylinder quantity control circuit 2 to both close a shut off valve 6 in an intake passage 5 at an idle side and open an exhaust gas recirculating valve 10 in an exhaust gas recirculating passage 9 thus allow cylinders #4W#6 to be in idling operation. In this case, an abnormality decision circuit 33 connected to opening degree sensors 31, 32 of each of the valves 6, 10 makes a decision of fault in the both valves 6, 10. At normal time as described in the above, open-close operations of the valves 6, 10 are switching controlled through driving circuits 35, 36 or the like on the basis of a cylinder quantity signal E. While at the time of an abnormality decision, control operation meeting the contents of a fault is performed like, for instance, both opening the shut off valve 6 and closing the exhaust gas recirculating valve 10 or the like.
