Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:Menthyl tetrahydrofuryl ether of the formula.
USE: A perfume and a stimulating agent, useful as a raw material for a cosmetic, medicine, etc., and having suppressed evaporating power or subliming power and delayed action by the modification of menthol.
PROCESS: A catalyst, e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid, is added to a homogeneous mixture solution of menthol with 2,3-dihydrofuran, and the mixture is then reacted at a temperature of the decomposition point of the menthol or below, e.g. room temperature to about 100°C, to give the compound of the formula. The compound is nontoxic to the human body, and hydrolyzed in an acidic solution to produce 4-hydroxybutanal nontoxic to the menthol and the human body with almost no effensive smell. The resultant product is incorporated in a neutral cosmetic, etc. to produce the menthol by the acidity of the human skin in use without producing the menthol in storage and exhibit the aromaticity and irritant action thereof. Therefore, the menthol need not be incorporated previously in a large amount.
