Abstract
PURPOSE:To make a casting additive inexpensive and high in ingot surface purifying ability and make the casting of a good quality ingot possible by using a mixture of amorphous fluorine-contg. calcium silicate and fluorine-contg. soda-lime glass as the main agents. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of neutral or weak basic amorphous fluorine-contg. calcium silicate and fluorine-contg. soda-lime is prepd. easily in the following manner: Materials contg. these glass components are blended at suitable ratios and the mixture is melted by heating followed by quick cooling and granulating and if necessary mechanical grinding. When the additive obtained in this way is added to the surface of molten steel, it melts uniformly on the molten metal surface, sufficiently follows up the fluctuations in the molten metal surface and provides excellent heat insulation characteristic and scum absorption. Hence, the resultant ingot has substantially no surface defects and provides neat appearance.
