Abstract
PURPOSE: To permit the regeneration of filter by combustion in order to keep the effective function of the filter for a long period of time by bringing a copper compound into contact with carbon particles present in exhaust gas being collected on the heat-resistant filter.
CONSTITUTION: Fine particles present in exhaust gas are collected by a heat- resistant filter 4, and when the filter 4 is blocked to a given extent, an aqueous solution of a copper compound, e.g., CuCl, CuCl2, Cu(OH)2, etc., is jetted from a supplier 5 so as to bring it into contact with the collected fine particles, whereupon the fine particles takes fire and are burned because the heat-resistant filter 4 is heated by waste heat. In this case, the temperature of ignition is lowered and the burning speed is accelerated by the action of the copper compound. The copper compound used may be powdery and may be supported on the heat-resistant filter which may have a ceramic honeycomb structure.
