Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase a scanning speed and the processing speed of an optical character reader by recognizing character patterns, scanned by line scanners, in parallel. CONSTITUTION:Line scanners 1a-1d having equal visual-field width are provided to respective recognition modules Ma-Md, and those scanners 1a-1d scan character patterns as manyas one line of a document. The character patterns scanned by the scanners 1a-1d are stored in buffers 2a-2d, and individual stored character patterns are recognized by corresponding recognition parts 3a-3d by referring to standard character patterns in a dictionary part 4. Individual character patterns scanned by said scanners 1a-1d are further recognized by the recognition parts 3a-3d in parallel to increase the processing speed of the optical character reader.
