PURPOSE:To reduce the transmission loss of ultraviolet rays, and to improve water resistance and durability by making an optical fiber of which the core is made of P2O5 glass and the clad is of a low refractive index resin and is applied with metallic coating on its outside. CONSTITUTION:To make an optical fiber for transmission of ultraviolet rays for medical use, analysis, etc., a high purity raw material 21 of P2O5 glass is put into a platinum crucible 22, and is melted and spun by being heated with an electric furnace 25, whereby a P2O5 glass fiber 23 is made. The fiber 23 is dipped in silicone resin or fluoroplastics liquid 24 of a low refractive index so that the resin is coated on the outside circumference. Thence, it is passed through an electric furnace 28 to allow the resin 24 to bake and set. A resin-baked fiber 26 is taken up on a reel or the like 27. The fiber 26 is then loaded into a vacuum deposition device, where metallic vapor of Sn, Pb, Cu, Au or the like is deposited on the outside circumference of the resin layer 24, thereby forming a metallic coating layer. In this way, the fiber for transmission of ultraviolet rays of good water resistance and a low transmission loss consisting of a low refractive index resin clad 2, and a metallic coating layer 3 on a P2O5 glass core 1 is obtained.
