Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform the efficient treatment of Mg-contg. molten Al to remove the Mg with less dissolution loss of Al by adding aluminum potassium fluoride to the molten Al optionally together with aluminum fluoride, agitating them to allow a lumpish product to rise to the molten Al surface, adding chloride of alkali or alkaline earth metal or fluoride, and carrying out agitation.
CONSTITUTION: Aluminum potassium fluoride having ≥0.5mm average particle size is added to Mg-contg. molten Al optionally together with aluminum fluoride, and they are agitated at 740W850°C. When a lumpish product rises to the molten Al surface by the agitation, chloride of alkali or alkaline earth metal such as NaCl or CaCl2 or a mixture of the chloride and fluoride of said metals such as AlF3 is added, and agitation is carried out. As a result, said lumpish product is disintegrated at once to effect the reaction of aluminum potassium fluoride enclosed in the product with Mg. After completing the reaction, the molten Al is deslagged by an ordinary method to remove the Mg.
