Abstract

PURPOSE:To polish a convex surface of an arbitrary radius, by providing a belt crosswise between two shafts and feeding a workpiece between them. CONSTITUTION:A polishing paper belt 8 is provided crosswise between two shafts 7, 7' so that the polishing surface of the belt 8 is located outside. When a workpiece 9 is moved along a straight line oblique at a predetermined angle to the two shafts 7, 7', the envelopes on the lines of contact between the workpiece 9 and the polishing paper belt 8 constitute a convex surface for polishing the convex surface of the workpiece 9. The radius of curvature of the convex surface constituted by the envelopes can be varied by altering the angle between the moving direction of the workpiece 8 and the straight line connecting the two shafts 7, 7'. When the distance between the shafts 7, 7' is altered, the contact pressure is varied and the degree of freedom of constituting the concave surface of the polishing paper belt 8 at the time of the contact of the workpiece 9 with the belt 8 is changed.
