PURPOSE:To improve precise measurement of a distance, to reduce a manufacturing cost, and to lighten the device, in weight, by a method wherein a PSD is used as the first and second semiconductor position detecting elements. CONSTITUTION:A first image position detector PSD1, and a second image position detector PSD2, which can move horizontally, are located at the rear of first and second image-formation lenses L1 and L2 for measuring a distance, and output currents I11, I12, I21, and I22, processed by position detecting, processing circuits PDC1 and PDC2, are outputted as electronic signals I01, and I02. The moving amount of a luminance center of gravity of an object is correctly found from the signals. The detector PSD2 is moved horizontally so that an output ID of a differential amplifier A4 becomes minimum, and when the movement is caused to relate with the adjustment amount of a photographic lens L3, whereby a focus can be adjusted. This permits the precise measurement of a distance at an inexpensive cost.
