Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled carrier particle having excellent mechanical strength, durability, cell-growing capability, etc., by the low-temperature plasma-treatment of synthetic resin particle composed of styrene resin particle until the degree of surface oxidation defined by the ratio of oxygen atom to carbon atom reaches a specific level.
CONSTITUTION: Carrier particles consisting of a styrene resin such as polystyrene, styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymer, etc., are prepared by conventional polymerization process. Low-temperature plasma is generated at the surface of the synthetic resin particle thus prepared, by imposing a high-frequency electric field, a micro-wave field, or a DC-field to a gas under a pressure of ≤100mmHg, and the stream of the plasma gas is made to contact with the particle. The oxidation of the surface is carried out until the O/C ratio reaches 0.15W0.35 measured by the X-ray photoelectron spectrum, to improve the hydrophylic properties of the particle and to obtain the carrier particle for tissue culture having high adhesivity and proliferation property of cells.
