Abstract

PURPOSE: To lower toxicity of a dopant, make having easy, improve oxidation stability and impart high electrical conductivity, by doping polyphenylene sulfide with sulfuric acid or SO3.
CONSTITUTION: Polyphenylene sulfide, e.g., poly (p-phenylene sulfide) or poly (m-phenylene sulfide), is doped with sulfuric acid or SO3 at -100W100°C to impart electrical conductivity. The resulting electrically conductive polyphenylene sulfide is a P-type semiconductor. The electrical conductivity can be arbitrarily controlled over a wide range of 10-13W10Ω-1. cm-1 depending on the amount and the kind of a dopant to be added. The toxicity of the dopant is very low as compared with conventional AsF5. Oxidation stability is very good. The product as such can be used as a high-molecular semiconductor. Further, when the product is combined with an N type semiconductor, a P/N hetero junction element can easily be formed. The product is useful as various diodes.
