Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out the denitration reaction of an organic nitric acid ester, without using complicated operations or external energy source, by the hetero- phase treatment of a hydrophobic phase containing said ester with an aqueous liquid phase containing the hydrosulfide, sulfide or polysulfide of ammonium or alkali metal.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrophobic liquid phase especially chlorinated hydrocarbon solution containing ≤80wt%, especially ≤60wt% organic nitric acid ester is subjected to the hetero-phase treatment with an aqueous liquid phase (aqueous solution) containing a sulfur compound selected from the hydrosulfide, sulfide and polysulfide of ammonium and alkali metal, especially a sulfide such as sodium sulfide, in the presence of preferably the hydroxide of ammonium or alkali metal and/or a phase-transfer catalyst at preferably 40W100°C. The denitration reaction proceeds quantitatively at the interface of the liquid phases, and the organic component and the inorganic component of the reaction product are essentially completely partitioned between both phases.
