Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled resin capable of providing laminates having stable quality and excellent in punchability, heat resistance and solvent resistance, by reacting a phenol with a drying oil in the presence of an acidic catalyst in a lower aliphatic alcohol solvent and then reacting the product with a formal dehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol is reacted with a drying oil in the presence of an acidic catalyst in a lower aliphatic alcohol solvent. The use of this solvent controls the reaction of a phenol with a drying oil and, accordingly, the reaction can be carried out uniformly because even in case where a phenolic acid having no substituent in the phenol nucleus is used, its miscibility is maintained without high polymer formation or gelation. Next, a formaldehyde is added to this reaction mixture in the presence of a basic catalyst, and the resulting mixture is subjected to a resol-forming reaction. The resulting oil-modified phenol resin is infiltrated into kraft paper or the like and dried to prepared coated paper. A plurality of the coated paper sheets are laminated and, if necessary, copper foil is laid on one or both sides, and pressed under heating to form a laminated sheet or a copper-clad laminated sheet.
