Abstract
PURPOSE: To safely store radioactive substances for a long period of time, by a method wherein a metal waste material containing radioactive substances is melted in the presence of an inorg. substance having basicity of 0.5 or less to reduce the volume thereof and radioactive substances are transferred to the side of said inorg. substance.
CONSTITUTION: A metal waste material containing radioactive substances and an inorg. substance having basicity of 0.5 or less such as concrete, zeolite or the like are thrown in a throw-in port 2 to be melted by heating. By this treatment, the metal waste material is melted to form a lower layer and the inorg. substance collects radioactive substance to form an upper layer 8 as a floated substance and uncollected substances are introduced into a filter apparatus 6 from dust discharge dust 4 to be discharged to the atmosphere as a purified gas. The filter apparatus 6 has such a beneficial point that accumulation of radioactive substances to the inner wall of a treating furnace and the filter apparatus is reduced compared to a conventional volume reducing installation. In addition, separation efficiency of radioactive substances is good and exhausion of radioactive substances from the treating furnace as dust is reduced.
