Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the removal of surfactants from waste water at low cost, by adsorbing the surfactants in the waste water onto coke, and reusing the surfactant- adsorbing coke itself as a material to be charged into a sintering furnace.
CONSTITUTION: A large quantity of coke having a size of 3mm or so is used as a carbon source for a sintering furnace in a steel making factory. Prior to this use, the coke is used as an adsorbent for surfactants in waste water. When the coke loses its adsorbing power, the coke is taken out from the surfactant-adsorbing system, dried and used as a carbon source in the sintering furnace as in a conventional manner. In this case, since the surfactants adsorbed onto the coke are organic substances, the surfactants burn as a fuel in the sintering furnace and to not give any harmful effect. Moreover, from the standpoint of the disposal of the used adsorbent, the coke is reused in the sintering furnace or as an ordinary fuel, so that it is not necessary to take the disposal of the used adsorbent into consideration.
