Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare magnesium enolate of isophorone which is a raw material for perfumes in high yield without requiring a special cooling apparatus, by reacting a Grignard reagent with isophorone in the presence of an iron salt in a hydrocarbon solvent.
CONSTITUTION: 3,5,5-Trimethyl-3-cyclohexen-1-one (isophorone) is reacted with a Grignard reagent in the presence of an iron salt, e.g. iron (III) chloride or iron (III) bromide, to give magnesium enolate of the isophorone expressed by the formula (X is Cl, Br or I). The reaction temperature is -30W+25°C, preferably -10W+5°C.
